Mimmo Rotella

Rotella is known for his decollage works in post war Europe. Made from torn advertisment posters glued onto canvas, its interesting to see these collages ‘naturally’ occur in our urban environments just with human interaction and time.

With A Smile, 1962. A decollage made from torn movie posters, glued onto canvas. Fragments of words and people are among the vast amount of layers that create this piece. The act of decollage entails removing parts of the image instead of adding onto the image, as you would with a collage. This mixture of collage and then decollage creates a mass of torn layers on top of each other creating a see of torn paper and distorted imagery.
